What is today called "Thai massage" or "Thai yoga massage" is an ancient healing system combining acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles, and assisted yoga postures.
In the Thai language it is usually called nuat phaen thai ("Thai-style massage") or nuat phaen boran ("ancient-style massage"), though its formal name is merely nuat thai (Thai massage) according to the Traditional Thai Medical Professions Act, The art form is also commonly known as "yoga massage" or "Thai yoga massage", as the practice is essentially a form of assisted yoga performed by the giver, with the receiver completely passive throughout.
Traditional Thai massage uses no oils or lotions. The recipient remains clothed during a treatment. There is constant body contact between the giver and receiver, but rather than rubbing on muscles, the body is compressed, pulled, stretched and rocked.
The recipient of the massage wears loose, comfortable clothing and lies on a mat or firm mattress on the floor. In Thailand the massage is often given to a group of a dozen or so subjects receiving massage simultaneously in the same large room. The true ancient style of the massage requires that the massage be performed solo with just the giver and receiver. The receiver will be positioned in a variety of yoga-like positions during the course of the massage, that is also combined with deep static and rhythmic pressures.
The massage generally follows designated lines ("sen") in the body. The legs and feet of the giver can be used to position the body or limbs of the recipient. In other positions, hands fix the body, while the feet do the massaging. A full Thai massage session typically lasts two hours or more and includes rhythmic pressing and stretching of the entire body. This may include pulling fingers, toes, ears, cracking knuckles, walking on the recipient's back, and moving the recipient's body into many different positions. There is a standard procedure and rhythm to the massage, which the giver will adjust to fit the receiver.
Benefits of Thai Massage
Like other forms of massage, Thai massage has many benefits, both physical and mental/emotional. Some of these benefits can be experienced after only one session of Thai massage, while others become apparent after multiple, regular sessions.
One of the biggest benefits is the relaxation that comes from it. Numerous studies have shown that those who have massages are more relaxed, and many seek out massage as a form of relaxation. This, paired with the yoga-like elements of Thai massage, which is also relaxing, ensures that Thai massage can help even the most tense person find relaxation. Along with this, Thai massage is an excellent way to relieve stress. Since stress can have long-term and serious effects on the body and mind, using Thai massage to help relieve stress will help improve overall health.
Because of the deep-tissue manipulation involved in Thai massage, another benefit is increased circulation throughout the body. The physical touch of the massage promotes blood flow, and when you have increased circulation and improved blood flow, blood and oxygen get to your body more effectively, improving your overall health.
Thai massage is a full-body massage. Since the massage therapist moves your body in yoga-like positions and movements, regular Thai massage can also increase your flexibility and range of motion. This can be particularly helpful during a physician-approved rehabilitation program following an injury or illness.
Because Thai massage is more rigorous than other forms of massage, it is more invigorating. The benefit of this is that you will walk away from your massage session feeling more energized. This is also a side-effect of relieving stress and increased circulation, but increased energy can also help you in other areas of your life, such as getting through slow afternoons at work.
Born and raised in Thailand, I grew up giving and receiving massage as part of my culture. I've studied Thai Yoga Massage in Thailand, Los Angeles, and most recently here in Northwest Florida. I enjoy learning new instructors. I studied nursing, then formally studied massage and skin care, and someday hope to study physical therapy. Helping others has always made me happy, so this career is a great fit. Clients come to me stressed or in pain, and they leave relieved of pain, relaxed, and rejuvenated. I look forward to doing the same for you.
